From The Archives - Episode 2 - RHL Beginnings

By 2002, the Weston Beach Race was firmly established as one of the toughest and most iconic events in British motorsport. That year, however, brought its own challenges. Due to adverse conditions, the race was postponed and rescheduled, making 2002 one of the few times in Weston’s history that the event did not run as originally planned.

It was also one of the first years with Gareth Hockey at the helm, having taken over the running of the event in 2001. Gareth understood Weston inside and out – as a rider, a supporter, and now as the organiser responsible for guiding the race forward. The decision to reschedule wasn’t taken lightly, but it reflected a determination to protect the integrity of the event and ensure it was run properly.

When the race finally went ahead, the quality of competition reminded everyone exactly why Weston had earned its reputation. The entry list featured many of the leading riders of the time, across solos, quads and sidecars. Among them was David Knight, who delivered one of the standout performances in Weston history by winning both the solo and quad races – a remarkable achievement that further cemented his status as a Weston legend.

As ever, Weston wasn’t just about the winners. Hundreds of riders lined up to take on three hours of relentless sand, deep ruts and punishing conditions, supported by officials and volunteers who helped the event run smoothly despite the earlier disruption. The atmosphere on the beach was as special as ever – proof that even a postponed Weston was still unmistakably Weston.

Looking back at the 2002 programme now, it represents a key moment in the race’s story. A year of challenge, transition and unforgettable performances, it helped lay the foundations for the modern Weston Beach Race we know today.
