With the second round of the Revo ACU British Motocross Championship Fuelled by Gulf Race Fuels heading to Foxhill near Swindon next Sunday (17th April). RHL Activities caught up with Crendon Fastrack Honda's Jay Hague to recap on the season opener but also to get his thoughts on Foxhill.
Jay Hague ended the opening round of the Official ACU British Motocross Championship in ninth position after some mixed emotions. Read on down to find out what Jay had to say when we fired over some questions this week.
I can imagine you have mixed emotions after round 1, qualifying P4 and finishing 3rd in the first race, you were looking like a sure bet for the podium and a big haul of points, race 2 saw you DNF. Can we get your thoughts on the day?
"Culham for me was mixed emotions, a decent qualifying and race 1 had my hopes set on a overall podium. Obviously that didn’t happen due to another rider making bad decisions, was happy to come back and get a top 3 straight away even tho I didn’t feel I was riding my best."
In the second race we saw you DNF after a collision with 2 other riders leaving your bike damaged forcing the retirement. Can we get your view of what happened and what was the extent of the damage to your Crendon Fastrack Honda machine?
"Race 2 was a nightmare. Firstly I got wiped out on the first lap by another rider which was clearly intentional and left my throttle damaged, that put me to the back of the pack. I was then making my way back through and unfortunately another rider made a mistake as I was passing him and his bike fell into my back wheel causing damage to my back brake and at this point the bike was to damaged to carry on."
The track was notably rough through the course of Sunday, tough conditions for the first round of the season, how did your fitness hold up at least in race 1 and do you think you're training in the off season paid off?
"The track was really rough but normally I like it when it’s rough and technical. I've been struggling with arm pump recently but my fitness was great thanks to step 1 fitness, hopefully the arm pump isn’t there now and I can show how I can ride."
Due to how rough the track was at Culham many riders were making set up changes especially with suspension settings. Could you give us an insight into any changes you and your team made to the bike through the course of the day?
"I’m not really a person to make changes on the bike if the team thinks there’s something wrong they will make the odd change as I don’t really think about it."
Round 2 of the British Championship sees us head to Foxhill, a venue that proved difficult for you last year through illness. Is Foxhill a track you like and how will you approach training leading up to the event?
"Foxhill for me is a hit and miss track, one time you go I love it and next time I hate it so I guess we will see after the next round what I think of it. As for preparation leading up to it I’ll just try ride more hard tricky surface type of track just so I can get a similar feel."
